Danger Behind the Wheel: Driving Under the Influence is Deadlier than You Think

People often drive after having a couple of drinks because, despite being under the influence of alcohol, they believe they are capable of properly operating a vehicle. It is a reckless choice that many make on a regular basis simply because they are unaware of the level of their impairment. Accidents caused by slightly inebriated, or “buzzed”, drivers can have serious consequences for innocent motorists on Texas roads and highways. Even trace amounts of alcohol in the bloodstream increase the risk of being involved in a fatal car accident according to a new study conducted by the University of California-San Diego. Researchers have concluded that drivers with a blood-alcohol content (BAC) level of .01 are more likely to be responsible for causing car accidents compared to sober motorists.

Buzzed Drivers More Likely to be at Fault for Accidents

Researchers analyzed information from an extensive national database of more than 570,000 fatal car accidents that covered the period between 1994 and 2011. The study found that a driver with a blood alcohol content of .01 is 46% more likely to be at fault for an accident than a sober driver. What this basically means is that the average person may be impaired after only a single alcoholic beverage and should not attempt to operate a vehicle.

Sober Motorists at Risk

A driver choosing to operate a vehicle after having a single alcoholic beverage is not only tempting fate. He/she is also placing sober motorists on the road in harm’s way. This study helped researchers determine that even a slight alcohol-related impairment can increase the risk of an accident occurring. There is no “safe” amount of alcohol in the bloodstream when it comes to operating a vehicle.

Legal Implications of Buzzed Driving

The reality is that people continue to drive after having a few drinks, placing other people at risk for catastrophic injuries or fatalities. These accidents can be devastating for victims and their families. It is vital for you to consult with a personal injury attorney if you or a loved one has been involved in an accident with a driver who was impaired, but not legally intoxicated. An attorney will help you take the appropriate legal action to hold negligent drivers accountable for their acts and ensure you receive maximum compensation for your injuries or losses.
